Athlete Profile – Andrew Elkind

As part of the Sports Photography Workshop in Colorado Springs I was very privileged to have access to athletes at the USA Olympic Training Centre.  One of the athletes that I was fortunate enough to meet and work briefly with was Andrew Elkind, member of the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team.

Not being the type of person to stay quiet, Andrew very patiently answered my questions while he worked it for the camera.

Andrew has been training in gymnastics since the age of 6.  Now 25, he has resided full-time at the Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs for the past four years.  Having witnessed him in training for a couple of hours prior to photographing him, you can see that his dedication to being one of the U.S’ elite gymnasts is nothing short of admirable.  This could have something to do with the gruelling 6-day a week training that he participates in!

Missing out on competing at Beijing due to a torn bicep seems to have only made Andrew more focussed on London.  He is realistic that it may be his last chance to compete at Olympic level as male gymnasts tend to retire at around the age of 30.  After meeting him, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he took the age limitations on.

Andrew, I wish you all the best for your training and at competition in London.  Thank you for taking some time out to work with me.

Playing Around – Human Puppy Dog Images!?

I think sometimes we forget to just take time out and “play around” with our current gear or new gear.  I for one am definitely guilty of this!!!  Seems life gets soooooo busy that the grassroots of photography fun can be forgotten.

I decided over the Christmas period to have a bit of fun with a borrowed 16mm Fisheye lens.  After taking a couple of photos of my less-than impressed family members, it was suggested that the photos were reminiscent of those close up photos of animals, particularly dogs.  You know the ones, the close up of the nose then the fade off of the aperture??  Aaaaanyhow, I decided that I would do a mini-series of what I call my Human Puppy Dog Images.  I decided not to focus specifically on the nose like those images do – no real reason except that it felt weird having the eyes blurred.

This of course required my immediate and extended family to be the targets and although there was much moaning about how big their noses looked and how weird it made their faces, there were lots of laughs at the results.  Isn’t that what Christmas is about??!!

Upcoming Course

Tomorrow, 30th of November, 2010, Camera Electronic will be hosting Steve Saporito and his course “Multiplying profits From Portraits”.  Steve has been credited with the success of a number of portrait studios Austalia wide and will be imparting his knowledge at the Northbridge Hotel between 10am and 5pm.

There are still spots available and if you have any interest in expanding your portraiture business then this would be one course to attend.

Contact Camera Electronic to book on 93284405.

Baby Molly

I had the pleasure recently of photographing baby Molly and her very proud parents Tash and Ray.  I am going to be honest here and admit that everyone has to start somewhere and this was my first time photographing a child so young.  Let me tell you – WAAAAY different to photographing fast-moving mountain bikes!  It couldn’t have been a better shoot to cut my teeth on (no pun intended….).  Little Molly was a pleasure to photograph and was very patient with the camera.  Here’s a sneak preview of the shoot……

Fiona

Well it has been busy!!!  A little while ago I organised for Fiona to model for me.  This came after a discussion at a mutual friends home where Fiona expressed that she had a hard time getting a good photo of herself.  Naturally I saw this as a challenge!  We met on two occasions – once on location and once in a studio setting.  Fiona liked the idea of exploring heavy shadowing and like me she has a bit of a “thing” for black and white.  Although black and white is mostly what has been gone for, I must admit I couldn’t go past the colour of her gorgeous blue eyes…….yep that is her real eye colour…..no adjustments made!  Fiona, I hope you love the outcome as much as I do and we achieved what you wanted to achieve.

Studio Shoot

Exploration of different fields and styles of photography is important.  With this shoot I wanted to explore and achieve pure white and black through the use of studio lighting.  I really love the results and my beautiful model Naomi really nailed a combination of sexiness and vulnerability.
